We have offered startup advice on different issues that new businesses face in the past week. One issue that not only startups but many other organizations are facing these days is not being able to find skilled professionals to hire. Amid more alarming data suggesting the economic recovery is sputtering to a halt, many analysts are focusing on the “skills gap.”
The “skills gap,” as astutely illustrated in a recent essay in the New Yorker, is simple. It’s the idea that there is a gap between the skills American workers have and the ones that businesses need. This may resonate with startups that are looking to hire, but for whatever reason, cannot find the perfect match.
This gap is predicated on the idea that workers just aren’t qualified for the jobs at hand. But take the logic and turn it on its head: some businesses are waiting around for the perfect hire – or in other words, a worker that may not exist. For example, the New Yorker article sites one case study in which a company received 25,000 applications for a standard engineering job – and turned them all down.
The article cites three causes of this skills gap. One, employers are waiting for perfection when “good enough” is sufficient. Let’s face it, if you keep waiting for the “perfect guy” for the job, you are going to have to wait for a long time. Two, the hiring process is more complicated than ever – many qualified individuals fall through the cracks. Keep your hiring procedure simple. And three, companies are cutting back on training. Untrained employees lack experience and, in turn, are less likely to get hired. Training is an important part of your employee’s growth, companies need to focus more on training.

Technology has made it possible for employers to assess candidates. By adding validated testing instruments to a hiring system that also includes written job descriptions, a thorough job application, consistent interviews, background and reference checks, employers will have all the information they need to make a sound, objective hiring decision.
Perfect blog from HR perspective. After spending lots of time we have aligned our HR hiring process as per our business strategy. It is true that it is difficult to find a perfect match so we hire a potential candidate and groom him as per our requirements. Training and development is what we emphasize most in our organization and it has given us wonderful results.
It is said that "You cannot judge the talent of a fish by its ability to climb a tree" , and rightly so. Getting the best man in the market doesnt always score the best possible outcome. Getting the best man for the job does! As stated in the article itself, its either you get the best talent for the specific role or train your employees to match the needs of your company.
I disagree with the point about keeping the hiring procedure simple. The process is made to be selective as to weed out any unqualified applicants. As a startup founder, I have very little time and I wouldn't want to waste it on interviewing inept candidates.
