Ask any Boomer about business and social responsibility and you’ll likely see a wistful gaze as they recall the days of protests, communes, and co-ops that railed against the (profit-turning) machine—before they became the machine. Mutual exclusivity was the rule back then, with business on one side of the equation, and social and environmental responsibility on the other. The zero-sum game always ended the same way: with a winner and a loser.
Enter social business, or conscious capitalism. Conscious capitalism is about using the power of business to address social and environmental problems, large and small, all over the globe—and still turn a profit. The best thing about this new model? It is not a zero sum game – for either our collective conscience or our businesses. Profit and social responsibility are no long adversaries, and your loss is no longer my gain. The more we share our expertise, insights, information, and experience, the more we all win.
